December update

I know many of you are waiting anxiously with news on Darkness Wanes.  It’s progressing, though not as fast as I’d like.  I’m working on revisions for the early chapters now and once I have them finished I’ll move back to writing the remaining chapters of the book.  The holidays have slowed me down a bit, as well as the medical issue mentioned in my last post.  No definitive news on that yet, but a new doctor I’m seeing is recommending some testing I haven’t had done.  She thinks I might have endometriosis and recommended laparoscopic surgery to check.  It could be what is causing my problem, but it’s a rather invasive procedure for something I might not have.  For now, I’m looking at alternatives and waiting until after the holidays before deciding what step to take next.

Now for some good news!  A while back, Kara-Karina over at Nocturnal Book Reviews asked me to write a short Christmas story for the Sensor Series.  She asked that it especially feature Kerbasi.  This was tricky because I knew it would have to be set after Darkness Wanes on the series timeline.  With the delays on the book, I didn’t want to reveal any major spoilers.  I eventually settled on telling the story from an all-new character’s point of view (a human woman).  It involves her meeting Kerbasi during a blizzard in Fairbanks on Christmas Eve.  They don’t hit it off too well at first, but their situation sort of forces them together.  You’ll have to read it to find out what else happens.

This story doesn’t conflict with Darkness Wanes in any way.  The only spoilers you might see are the fact Kerbasi is still around and the world is still dealing with supernaturals being out in the open.  Nothing earth-shattering.  I meant for it to only be about 2500 words, but it grew to about 5000 words after revisions/edits.  The title of the story is “An Unexpected Gift” and will go live on Nocturnal Book Reviews early morning on Christmas Eve.  Those who stop by and comment will be entered into a drawing with the chance to win a Kindle Fire HD 8 and some other book promo items.  I hope this helps make up for the book delays and that you enjoy the story.  I will post a reminder here and on other social media so you don’t forget to check it out.  A winner for the drawing will not be selected until December 30th.  If you can’t get to it right away, you still have a few days after Christmas to make it.

I’m also participating in a Facebook holiday event with 20 other urban fantasy authors.  A lot of amazing prizes are being given away each day.  Some of you have already joined in, but for anyone else who is interested this is the link:  https://www.facebook.com/events/1479007045739422/

Stalked by Flames book trailer and behind the scenes pics

I’ve spent the last few days working on the book trailer for Stalked by Flames.  It took months of planning and coordination to put together since I had to get extra model shots done during the cover shoot (back in April) for it, along with finding the right music and clips to include in there.  You can check it out below.  Expect to see some footage similar to how things would appear in the book after Earth is attacked by dragons and a shot of a guy who looks close to how I see Aidan in my head (with some fire added around him, of course).  Thanks to Claudia McKinney at Phatpuppy Art) for doing the custom art for the still pics in the video!

Below are the behind-the-scenes pics from the cover/promo shoot my photographer (Teresa Yeh) was kind enough to send.  The model (Isabella Capri) who poses as Bailey had to get rather beaten up and bloody for one of the shots.  I was impressed with the amazing job she did pulling off the look and with the make-up artist (Nadya Rutman) for the realistic work she did getting the model ready (along with her assistant, Katy).  Isabella was kind enough to donate her own shorts and tank top for the shot since we didn’t want to mess up anything new.

Everything else the model is wearing I purchased through online retailers with the help of my cover design team (Sarah, Rachel, and Kristy) in choosing the right pieces.  One item was custom-made for the model.  The leg garter harness you see on the book cover and another shot in the video.  Thanks to Alison Esposito at Wild Wolf Leatherwork for putting the extra effort into crafting it just for this book series.  She did a great job!

Memorial Day Charity Drive 2015

Some of you may remember me participating in a charity drive on Veterans Day last year.  I donated all the royalties earned on Darkness Haunts that day to the Wounded Warrior Project.  In remembrance of Memorial Day, I’m donating all the royalties earned (for ebook and paperback) on Darkness Haunts for a whole week beginning today, May 22nd.  My hope is to raise at least $500 to give to the Wounded Warrior Project to help veterans in need.  After the drive is over on May 29th I will come back to announce the total and show the receipt for my donation.

Of course, I realize most of you following this blog already own a copy of the novel, but if you could spread the word to others who might be interested in purchasing Darkness Haunts that would be great.  Tweeting or sharing the event on Facebook would also be very helpful.  Here’s a link to the project Facebook page:  https://www.facebook.com/vetsgiveback

As another alternative you could check out books by other participating authors to help in their fundraising campaign.  All of them are veterans donating to various veteran-related charities.  A list of their books, according to genre, can be found here.

For more information about the drive and how you can help see the official announcement below:

Memorial Day 2015 Veteran’s Charity Challenge: Gone, but Not Forgotten!

During Memorial Day week, from the 22nd to 29th of May, more than 70 veteran authors will pledge 100% of their print, ebook and audio book royalties to their favorite charity supporting veterans or a large flat-rate donation. In most cases, these are organizations that assisted the authors personally and they are trying their best to give back.

Veterans from each service branch and every conflict period, from Vietnam to even active duty authors, are pledging. This diverse collection of works includes New York Times and USA Today Bestsellers and covers most genres. From romance to action-adventure and everything in between, there’s something for every taste here!

The ultimate goal of this event is to raise at least $10,000 for the 20+ charities they’re supporting. If you aren’t interested in purchasing any of the pledged books, you can always make a direct and public donation. We track the money raised for each charity and spotlight bonus donations here. Whether you contribute to the best performing or the least performing, either way your donation will be put to good use!

The complete collection of participating books and charities can be found here:

If you are interested in helping support or promote this event without having to donate, please share this charity drive on Facebook, Twitter or your website. Every little bit of help makes a difference! #vetsgiveback
